Heifer Raising—birth to Weaning 32) Pneumonia

چکیده
Pneumonia is the second most common health problem in young calves, after diarrhea. Respiratory infections include all diseases affecting the entire respiratory tract. In contrast, pneumonia is a term that describes inflammation of the lungs only. Pneumonia is a disease that may vary from subclinical to acute and fatal. Depending on the severity of the infection, damage to the lungs can be temporary or permanent. Calves with chronic pneumonia seldom recover completely and should not be used as replacement animals. Most respiratory problems occur when the calf is between six and eight weeks of age. They are caused by the interaction of one or more microorganisms with stress (e.g., transport), housing (e.g., ventilation) and nutrition of the calf. Rate of morbidity (the incidence of the disease) is usually high, but the rate of mortality is variable. The major organisms implicated in outbreaks of calf pneumonia are summarized in Table 1. Winter grazing system and supplementation of beef cows during late gestation influence heifer progeny.
A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used to evaluate effects of dam winter grazing system and supplementation in the last third of gestation on subsequent BW gain, feed efficiency, and reproduction in heifer progeny. Crossbred cows (yr 1, n = 109; yr 2, n = 114; yr 3, n = 116) grazed range (WR) or corn residue (CR) during winter and within grazing treatment received 0.40 kg/d of 31%...
متن کاملA Study of Dairy Heifer Rearing Practices from Birth to Weaning and Their Associated Costs on UK Dairy Farms
There are many inputs into the dairy replacement herd which impact not only on the cost of rearing heifers from birth to first calving, but also on their future longevity and production potential. This study determined the current cost of rearing dairy heifers in the UK through the calculation and analysis of individual costs on a subset of 102 UK dairy farms. Each farm was visited and an exten...
متن کاملGenotype x environment interactions in preweaning traits of purebred and reciprocal cross Angus and Brahman calves on common bermudagrass and endophyte-infected tall fescue pastures.
Preweaning data on 486 Angus, Brahman, and reciprocal cross calves (AB, BA) managed on common bermudagrass or endophyte-infected tall fescue were used to evaluate the interactions of forage type and sex of calf with direct effects, individual heterosis, and maternal effects. Calves were spring-born in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 to five sires of each breed. Male calves were castrated at birth, a...
متن کاملNon-genetic Factorsaffecting Weaning Performance of Angus Cattle in N.s.w
Birth date, weaning weight and date, sex of calf, year of birth, age of dam and management group were recorded for each calf. Birth weights were recorded in only one herd and standard values of 27.2 kg and 29.5 kg were used for heifer and bull calves respectively in other herds. For the purpose of the analyses age of dam was restricted to five groups, two-, three-, four-, five to eight-, and ov...
متن کاملTime of zeranol implantation on growth, reproduction and calving of beef heifers.
Zeranol implants were administered to 250 crossbred heifer calves at 1, 6 or 9 mo of age to evaluate growth, reproduction and calving performance. Heifers were assigned to eight treatment groups with 25 animals per group. Two additional groups of 25 heifers each were used to study the effects of multiple implants at two levels of nutrition on heifer performance. Implants at 1 mo of age (brandin...
